Hey everyone, happy new year!
I thought I'd share a video from a performance a little while back- demonstrating the use of a cadenza at the end of Summertime- I'm glissandoing from F# to F# (one octave) then climibing up half steps to our high B.. It's certainly worth practicing your glissandos- people love them!

I like the way Dr.Saxlove is playing Ain't no sunshine. Especially how he keeps the last tone and makes it vibrating. Is it possible to do something similar with the clarinet and if yes, how?

Hi- I just joined. I'm really experienced on the clarinet, did the conservatory thing blah blah..., but no jazz. I so appreciate the breakdown of the various techniques, rhythms, and articulations. I just watched the video on swing rhythms(i think it was) and felt so validated to hear that these elements need to be internalized to be effective. The new band director where I teach clarinet is pre dominantly a jazz musician, a great person and musician and from time to time he'll ask me to help one of the kids with the jazz band music or improv and I'll look at him like a deer in headlights and ask if he's got any resources so I can learn first! HAHAHA! He'll tell me to throw on a backing track and play along or don't over think it- there are just more dotted rhythms and syncopations. HAHAHA! I think of…

Yes, to me music, and particularly jazz, is the same as learning a new language. There are rules (that can often be broken!), many subtleties that cannot be written down but learned with repeated listening, and cultural aspects that give more depth to the language. It's a long road, but an inspiring one!
And unfortunately, the community is very shy and reluctant to post videos, but I encourage it fully!
We are all learning, and if you decide to post, I would be super happy. Any harsh or non- helpful comments will be deleted, and those members will be barred from the site- just so you know.

Hi Erica, it's a type of sound I would loosely describe as "subtone"- he's playing soft with an airy tone, and has a lot of reverb on the instrument to make it "sweeter" (one of those studio tricks)
